Warm welcome to Dr. Hélène Seiler who has accepted a W1-W2 tenure track position at the Freie Universität Berlin. The new research group will focus on the development and use of ultrafast methods to characterize nanomaterials of relevance for devices such as solar cells, LEDs and lasers.

A step towards the Quantum Internet: Building networks from quantum-memory satellites
Quantum physicists from an inter-institutional project around Prof. Jens Eisert (Freie Universität Berlin) were able to show that information transfer could indeed take place over intercontinental distances with the help of quantum memory satellites and with a quantum repeater strategy. The results of the work were published in "Nature: Communication Physics." The members of the Dahlem Center for Complex Quantum Systems who have contributed to the work are Julius Wallnöfer, Frederik Hahn, Fabian Wiesner, Nathan Walk and Jens Eisert.

Athletic performance and team spirit at the Campus Run and Summer Party
True to the motto "Mens sana in corpore sano", physicists showed at the Campus Run 2022 that they excel not only academically but in athletics, too. With 23 runners, the "PhysRunners" team was the second largest at the university.

Nano Science in Dahlem: SupraFAB research building opened
A new research building SupraFAB, "Supramolecular Functional Architectures at Biological Interfaces", was ceremonially opened on the Dahlem campus of Freie Universität Berlin on May 30, 2022. Several physics research groups (Reich, Franke, Bolotin, Heberle and Kozuch) will move into the new sustainable building at Altensteinstraße 23a in the coming months.

Kick-off Event of the Einstein Research Unit
On May 12, 2022, about twenty quantum physics research groups from Berlin met for a kick-off event at the Harnack House in Berlin-Dahlem. The research groups are part of the Einstein Research Unit "Perspectives of a quantum digital transformation: Near-term quantum computational devices and quantum processors". Within the Berlin University Alliance, the researchers set out jointly to understand the precise computational power of near-term quantum devices and to devise building blocks for quantum processors. Prof. Dr. Jens Eisert is the speaker of the ERU.

Our master's double degree program in physics receives further support from the Franco-German University
Since 2014, master's students in physics have been able to earn a double degree. They study at Freie Universität Berlin and at the renowned Institut Polytechnique de Paris and receive two physics degrees at the end. The double master's degree program is funded by the Franco-German University, which has been promoting joint Franco-German study programs since 1997.

Prof. Dr. Christiane Koch is the new Chair of the Quantum Optics and Photonics division at DPG
Prof. Dr. Christiane Koch takes over the chair position of the division "Quantum Optics and Photonics" of the German Physical Society (DPG). She will chair the division from 2022 to 2024 aiming to provide new impulses for knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary knowledge transfer on the topics of quantum optics and photonics.

Quantum complexity grows linearly for an exponentially long time
A new publication in "Nature Physics": Quantum physicists from Freie Universität Berlin and Harvard University, USA, solve Brown and Susskind's conjecture on the growth of complexity and thus find a way to prove an assumption that was previously difficult to tackle. For Jonas Haferkamp, who is the first author, the publication is a crowning achievement of his doctorate in the group of Prof. Dr. Jens Eisert.

New Publication in "Science": "Dynamics and mechanism of a light-driven chloride pump"
An international scientific team associated with the collaborative research center SFB 1078 "Protonation Dynamics in Protein Function" suggested that the charge separation observed in a light driven chloride pump is a fundamental feature for light energy conversion in nature as well as in technology.
